HUNTING OPTIONS AND
INFORMATION

Hunting is available the entire year, but the most popular time is mid-March to end-September due to the moderate temperatures. At Royal Karoo Safaris, we offer you a variety of hunting options: Clients can hunt off the Trophy Price List on a Daily Rate or choose a package and then add additional animals from the price-list. Alternatively, we can tailor-make a package for your needs. Note that 15% VAT is added to all non exportable services.

Most of our hunting is undertaken using the ‘walk-and-stalk’,
‘spot-and-stalk’, ‘stand’ or ‘still’ method and our hunts are Fair Chase. Shots vary between 100-300 yards and we urge you to practice shooting from the long bipod shooting sticks that are commonly used here. The large quantities of various game species on our hunting preserve limit the amount of travelling while on safari.

WHAT IS ETHICAL HUNTING?

At Royal Karoo, we pride ourselves on our ethical hunting practices. This means that our hunting is a fair chase, sustainable and designed to expose the hunter to the full scope of the diversity of our hunting preserve and surrounding concessions. By declaring that we are a fair chase hunting outfit, we commit ourselves to use hunting practices that pit the hunter’s skills against those of the game being hunted. We spend many hours walking and stalking, being sure to never shoot from the vehicles. This practice has resulted in our animals having very little fear of vehicle noise, thereby enhancing the tourism aspect of the game viewing experience. Our hunting areas are fenced – as required by law in South Africa. This does not, however, make your hunt any easier, as these areas are vast and, once a spooked animal disappears up the mountains, it’s ‘hunt on!’.

North America’s oldest wildlife conservation group, the Boone and Crockett Club, defines “FAIR CHASE”, as: the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of any free-ranging wild, big game animal in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper or unfair advantage over the game animals.”
“Wild” refers to an animal that is naturally bred and lives in nature. “Free-ranging” means an animal that is not confined by artificial barriers. We are required by law to have a perimeter fence to operate a South African hunting business licence, our vast area (25 000 acres) effectively means our game is free-ranging as most game have a natural ranging area of between 750 – 1250 aces

*Fair Chase is also a registered trademark of the Boone and Crockett Club.
