Hunting is available the entire year, but the most popular time is mid-March to end-September due to the moderate temperatures. At Royal Karoo Safaris, we offer you a variety of hunting options: Clients can hunt off the Trophy Price List on a Daily Rate or choose a package and then add additional animals from the price-list. Alternatively, we can tailor-make a package for your needs. Note that 15% VAT is added to all non exportable services.
Most of our hunting is undertaken using the ‘walk-and-stalk’, ‘spot-and-stalk’, ‘stand’ or ‘still’ method and our hunts are Fair Chase. Shots vary between 100-300 yards and we urge you to practice shooting from the long bipod shooting sticks that are commonly used here. The large quantities of various game species on our hunting preserve limit the amount of travelling while on safari.

For traditionalists seeking a unique challenge, Royal Karoo Safaris offers the opportunity to stalk and hunt with an original or copy of a black powder gun. At Royal Karoo, we pride ourselves on our ethical hunting practices. This means that our hunting is a fair chase, sustainable and designed to expose the hunter to the full scope of the diversity of our hunting preserve and surrounding concessions. By declaring that we are a fair chase hunting outfit, we commit ourselves to use hunting practices that pit the hunter’s skills against those of the game being hunted. We spend many hours walking and stalking, being sure to never shoot from the vehicles. This practice has resulted in our animals having very little fear of vehicle noise, thereby enhancing the tourism aspect of the game viewing experience. Our hunting areas are fenced – as required by law in South Africa. This does not, however, make your hunt any easier, as these areas are vast and, once a spooked animal disappears up the mountains, it’s ‘hunt on!’.
North America’s oldest wildlife conservation group, the Boone and Crockett Club, defines “FAIR CHASE”, as: the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of any free-ranging wild, big game animal in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper or unfair advantage over the game animals.” “Wild” refers to an animal that is naturally bred and lives in nature. “Free-ranging” means an animal that is not confined by artificial barriers. We are required by law to have a perimeter fence to operate a South African hunting business licence, our vast area (25 000 acres) effectively means our game is free-ranging as most game have a natural ranging area of between 750 – 1250 aces
WOW, an unforgettable experience! Rob & Laura went out of their way to make this a memorable trip for each one of us. This was my son’s first time hunting in Africa and he will never forget this. Our family absolutely loved every moment of our time at Royal Karoo! The food was amazing, the pool perfect on those hot African days and nights, the staff so friendly and helpful, the accommodation fantastic, not to mention the GIRAFFE WALK... truly an unforgettable African experience.
We stayed at The Royal Karoo for the first time this weekend for 3 nights and were blown away by this breathtaking oasis in the Karoo. Having been on a few hunting trips with my husband, I can definitely recommend The Royal Karoo to couples who want to experience some luxury combined with hunting, birding or just spending time in the veld. The food was outstandingly cooked by the in-house chef and we felt spoilt by all the staff from the minute we arrived, until we left. Thank you Royal Karoo for a memorable trip. We are looking forward to our next adventure with you with our family and friends.
What a great experience! My husband had so much fun hunting! The hunts were well organized and exhilarating! I even tagged along a few days to enjoy the beautiful topography and join in on the excitement. The lodge is beautiful and you truly feel at home during your stay. From the minute you arrive to the minute you leave the hospitality is top notch. Great food, customer service, hunting, views, and people!
Words can't describe Royal Karoo with Robert and Laura Birch and their son Andrew. The food was exquisite, from the appetizers to the springbuck ribs cooked slowly on the fire. The rooms and accommodations were immaculate the staff and cooks were attentive to all our needs. The hunting was outstanding with every kind of plains game you could want and the cape buffalo were impressive. I would definitely go back. Thank you Robert and Laura and thank you TJ for going with me on my first safari.
